The Alys Stephens Center presents educational workshops for children and teachers throughout the year. FOR CHILDREN
Acting Out Theatre Workshop
The Alys Stephens Center and Make It Happen Theatre Company are proud to announce an exciting new program for children ages 8-14, Acting Out Theatre Workshop.
Acting Out Theatre Workshop is an eight-week experience that shares with children the mechanics of acting and performance. Participants will learn theatre games, improvisation, warm-up and concentration exercises, voice and diction, theatre terminology, character development, and minimal musical theatre basics through a variety of fun, yet intense classes.
Best of all, the children will get a chance to showcase their newly developed skills when the workshop culminates with a Showcase Production open to all parents and friends.
Alicia Johnson-Reed will instruct the workshop along with other professional performance instructors. The classes are programmed for students who are seriously interested in performance, as well as for those who just want to have fun.
Classes will be on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to Noon at the Alys Stephens Center. Each session will be $95 per student. To enroll your child in the workshop, please contact Education & Outreach Director Kimberly Kirklin at (205) 934-0862 or kkirklin@uab.edu.
Workshop dates TBA.
FOR TEACHERS
Don't miss arts education seminars for local K-12 teachers. Each seminar will focus on specific art forms such as music, theatre, dance, and creative writing.
These seminars will be conducted by local educators and will meet the following objectives: (1) to educate teachers about the performing and visual arts and to instruct them on creative ways to incorporate the arts into their curriculums; (2) to equip teachers with an increased understanding and appreciation for the arts, coupled with a commitment to share it with their students by either inviting artists to their schools or by taking their students to local performances; (3) to emphasize the standards outlined in the Alabama State Course of Study on Arts Education and to provide strategies to meet those standards; and (4) to empower and inspire teachers to implement new techniques in the classroom.
Workshops dates TBA.
