See what performances the staff of the Alys Stephens Center recommends this season!
My staff picks are Complexions Contemporary Ballet and the ASC Kids’ Club.
I am especially excited about Complexions Contemporary Ballet this season. They are a cutting-edge, dynamic company that seeks to inspire audiences through thought-provoking performances using the finest talent around. Audiences can be assured that this will be an extremely high-quality program seeing as the two Artistic Directors were formerly with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and have received critical acclaim in either choreography or dance performance. I have a feeling this will be a season highlight!
It will be another exciting year for the ASC Kids' Club. We have some really fun things in store. We are kicking off the year with the "Rhythms of the Earth" Festival. This will be unlike anything you've seen at the Alys Stephens Center with music, crafts, food, and exhibitors! I am also excited about the Pilobolus Dance Theatre Kids' Show, our Black History Month Celebration, and the Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre performance with Vit Horejs. Finally, you won't want to miss two more wonderful theatrical shows written and directed by our own Jerry Sims. Parents, don't let your kids miss our on these unique educational programs!
- Kimberly Kirklin, Education and Outreach Director
My staff picks are Ralph Stanley, Blue Note Records, and the Punch Brothers.
One of the great things about the Stephens Center is the opportunity to sit at the feet of true artistic masters, and witness them working their craft, up close and personal in an intimate setting. In any of our venues, you feel as though the artist is playing your very own concert in your living room. One of these true masters that I am thrilled about seeing this season is Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys. His “high lonesome sound” and unique claw-hammer style of banjo picking has defined bluegrass music for decades, introducing real mountain music to multiple generations. Add to this Alabama’s very own Grammy nominated Claire Lynch Band and we’re in for a real treat as both ends of the bluegrass world come together for one unforgettable evening.
Another thing I love about the ASC is the unique musical groupings that find their way to our stages on a regular basis. In seasons past we’ve had Chick Corea in concert with Edgar Meyer, Sam Bush, and Jerry Douglas onstage together, and this year we’ve got Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt together in concert, and the Blind Boys of Alabama along with Preservation Hall Jazz Band. But the super group to top them all has got to be the Blue Note Records 70th Anniversary - On Tour concert. The accumulation of musical talent that will be onstage that night just boggles the mind. Any ‘normal’ concert by Bill Charlap, Ravi Coltrane, Lewis Nash, Nicholas Payton, Peter Washington, or any of the others would a not-to-be-missed event to be sure. But to have them all onstage for the same concert! All I can say is WOW.
I have to admit that one of my favorite concert experiences at the ASC was the Nickel Creek concert from 2006. This high energy show displayed the vast talents of young musicians who kept the sold-out audience in rapt delight well into the evening. Needless to say I am delighted to see the return of founding Nickel Creek member Chris Thile, this time with his incredible band the Punch Brothers. These guys take the fun and accessibility of Nickel Creek’s repertoire, and add to it the sensibility and musical chops of jazz masters, thus giving us an adventurous and fun-filled evening of musical bliss. I can’t wait!
- Bryan Jones, Box Office Manager
My staff picks are Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and An Evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt.
The first time I saw a video for the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, I was blown away. Taking their name from the neighborhood in NYC famous for its great food, music, and of course, dance, they honor their heritage while also being pretty innovative. A certain ridiculous hotel heiress might say, “That’s hot.” We’ll just say it’s “caliente!” To get a feel for their music, click here and watch the video. Another fun aspect of this show is the free salsa dance lessons in the lobby prior to the performance. It has the makings of a fun date night, for sure!
Even though I’m not an expert in the field of dance, I’ve always known that the Paul Taylor Dance Co. was one of those troupes that you just had to see given the opportunity. For many seasons we’ve tried to arrange scheduling for this show and now we finally have it on the books! Taylor’s always been known as cutting edge - I think Martha Graham even once referred to him as the “bad boy of dance.” He’s never shied away from putting controversial subject matter into his dance works and has always insisted on near perfection from his dancers. This will be the kind of show that both dance lovers and newbies will be able to appreciate.
Many of you may remember, as I do, the Songwriters Tour last year at the Alabama Theatre. The show featured Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Joe Ely, and Guy Clark (actually Guy Clark was a sick, but anyway…) It was a great show, but what struck me was the way John Hiatt practically stole the show. He was amazing! The interplay between he and Lyle was great, bouncing from one incredible song to another, telling great stories in between. For anyone who enjoys the craft of storytelling, this is a can’t miss show. Also, if you haven’t been in the ASC’s Jemison Concert Hall where this show is scheduled, it’s a very intimate space with mind-blowing acoustics - the perfect setting to see these two writers at the top of their game. (BTW, John Hiatt just released a new CD, Same Old Man, and it’s good listening from beginning to end!)
- Jessica Simpson, Marketing Director
My staff pick is Second City's Dysfunctional Holiday Revue.
One of the shows I am most excited about this season at the ASC is Second City's Dysfunctional Holiday Revue. I have seen some of their shows before and enjoyed them so much that each time I left wanting more! They are one of the most original and best Theatre Comic Improv groups in the country! Fast, inventive, edgy and SO Funny! And what a special treat this year to have a holiday themed show! In fact, this year I am giving tickets to the shows as my Christmas presents to friends! I can't think of anything they would enjoy more. I'll be at both performances and hope to see you there!
- Ed Rosendahl, Associate House Events Manager
My staff picks are “Alice’s (Even Bigger) Tea Party” and Pilobolus Dance Theatre.
This season, I am really excited about “Alice’s (Even Bigger) Tea Party.” The ASC Kids’ Club offers theatre experiences for kids of all ages. The previous “Tea Party” was fun, interactive, and had me smiling the whole time. I can’t wait to see what resident scribe Jerry Sims does to expand this wonderful piece of children’s theatre, my only request is to bring back the Dormouse, because he was brilliant.
If you watched the Oscars in 2006 like I did, you were blown away by the incredible shadow creations of each of the Best Picture nominees. That group of dancers is the multitalented Pilobolus Dance Theatre. With movement both athletic and artistic, this is a show you do not want to miss! I know I'll be there, so come by the box office and I'll set you up with some good seats.
- Heath Mixon, Box Office Associate
My staff picks are Wanda Sykes and Drew Mays.
Wanda Sykes is a little lady with a BIG Attitude. You can hear her voice as the Applebee’s apple on a TV set near you. Visiting her website is impossible without giggling (www.wandasykes.com). You miss this one and you will hate yourself in the morning.
You won’t believe your eyes, but Drew Mays is an ophthalmologist by day and an award winning pianist by night. Last year during his performance at the ASC, people were seeking me out to ask if they could possibly have my seat! So buy your tickets early as this is one not to miss.
- Dana Pharo, Technical Assistant
My staff picks are the Blind Boys of Alabama and Pilobolus Dance Theatre.
The Blind Boys of Alabama are in my opinion one of the best performances I have ever seen at the Alys Stephens Center. When they sang “Amazing Grace” to the tune of the “House of the Rising Sun” I literally had chills run up and down my spine. The power and verve with which they sing takes any of their songs to another level – sensually and spiritually. Do not miss this show – it’s life changing.
Pilobolus is by far and away the most dynamic dance troop I have ever seen. They are capable of contorting several of the troupe members into shapes that have to be seen to be believed. Just a couple of years ago they appeared as part of the backdrop at the Academy Awards. You will leave the ASC scratching your head and asking yourself – How did they do that? They are incredible entertainers and athletes.
- Phil Whatley, Business and Operations Director
My staff pick is Mavis Staples.
I can’t wait for Mavis Staples! An honest to goodness woman of soul. She carries her heart on her sleeve as she sings. Backed up by her sister Yvonne, she has sung with many other great musicians, from Dylan to Los Lobos and The Band. If you want to make your baby feel good on Valentine’s Day; bring them to hear Mavis Staples.
- Liz Grady, Artist Coordinator
My staff pick is our season kickoff party with BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet.
BeauSoleil translates as “beautiful sunshine.” It’s also the name of an 18th century Acadian rebel leader, BeauSoleil Broussard, after whom Michael Doucet, founder, fiddler, and passionate vocalist for the band, named the group. Spanning four decades and over 20 recordings, this Grammy award winner has been a favorite at festivals for many an avid music fan, Cajun or otherwise. Always performing with ferocious virtuosity this is the group that A Prairie Home Companion's Garrison Keillor calls "the best Cajun band in the world." It’s no coincidence Keillor has them on his show on a regular basis. But it’s not just the music that makes them a perennial favorite for fans including the ACME (Alabama Cajun Music Enthusiasts) crowd in Birmingham; they are also an incredible band for dancing. As Rolling Stone put it, they are "the best damn dance band you'll ever hear!" So, strap on your dancing shoes and hear them for yourself at the ASC Kickoff Party on Friday, September 26. Come early (6 p.m.) for a free dance lesson provided by members of ACME.
- Dan Gainey, Production and Facilities Director
My staff picks are Second City’s Dysfunctional Holiday Revue and The Harlem Quartet.
Skip the holiday shopping and spend the evening doubled over in laughter! If you enjoy fast-paced, interactive comedy with a twist of satire don’t miss this hilarious comedy troupe. The Second City has brought us some of comedy's brightest including Mike Myers, Tina Fey, Bill Murray, Steve Carrell, Stephen Colbert, and countless others. Be warned - nothing is too sacred for this holiday show.
The Harlem Quartet takes chamber music to a new level! This innovative and daring all-Black and Latino string quartet’s mission is to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences. They highlight works by minority composers which I find very refreshing. Check out their video on the site and see for yourself.
- Natalie Garcia, Marketing Manager
My staff pick is Garrison Keillor.
Seeing Garrison Keillor perform live is like sitting in your back yard on a cool summer evening with an old friend. As you listen to the sound of the neighbors children at play watch lightening bugs appear as the evening carries on, Garrison easily regales us with stories, songs, poems, and other pastoral observations of the human condition that alternately evokes sounds of laughter, feelings of nostalgia, a sense of mutual identity, and most of all a joyous feeling of being here. Come join us in our back yard for an evening with Garrison.
- Jerry Sims, House Events Manager and Volunteer Coordinator
My staff pick is Blue Note Records 70th Anniversary - On Tour.
This is a jazz lover’s dream group! We just don’t get a mainstream jazz band like this through Birmingham often enough. If I were you, I wouldn’t plan any live music events for the evening of Saturday, February 28, 2009 because all the musicians in town will be here in the audience!
- Tania Adams, Executive Assistant
My staff pick is kd lang.
Singer/songwriter/activist kd lang is in our eclectic palate series for good reason. Her body of work covers country to Jazz to adult contemporary. Just when you think you know what lang’s sound is she surprises you with her next album. She is also a fearless animal rights activist and has championed many HIV/AIDS charities. kd will sell out our house, so everyone should reserve their seats as soon as possible. It’s going to be an amazing night!
- Mark Marquis, Publications Specialist
My staff pick is the Blinds Boys of Alabama with Preservation Hall Jazz Band performance.
I am excited that the Blinds Boys of Alabama are returning to our venue this season. I have seen them perform many times and each time I am overwhelmed by their style, performance, and captivating love for what they do. There isn’t a dull moment and I suggest that everyone see them during their visit to the Alys Stephens Center on Saturday, October 18. This time they will be performing with Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which is twice the talent in one night!
- Lannie Guster, Jr., Financial Assistant
My staff pick is Neil Sedaka.
Although Neil Sedaka songs have been on the radio most of my life, I was never fully aware of his depth and breadth as a musician, until I watched a recent television special about him. He is not only an incredibly prolific songwriter, and a very dynamic and captivating entertainer, but also a very talented and classically trained musician. I think it will be an honor to have him here at the Alys Stephens Center, and I believe he will very much enjoy performing here. I’m sure that everyone who is able to get tickets for this show will leave feeling like they were very privileged to have seen and heard him here.
- Randi Bourdages, Box Office Associate
My staff pick is Jungua: Descendants of the Dragon.
My pick for the most enjoyable show this season is Jungua: Descendants of the Dragon. If you enjoy whirling swords: twirling, leaping Kung Fu action, and beautiful, graceful dancers, then you will really enjoy this group. They bring a slice of ancient China to the Deep South with a show that will be enjoyed by both young and old alike. That is why it is my pick for the upcoming season.
- David Loggins, Technical Director
My staff picks are Wanda Sykes and An Evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt.
I was thrilled to hear that Wanda Sykes is coming to the ASC. I’ve been a fan for years of her brash, earthy humor. It’ll be a night to remember for a long time.
I’m also very excited about the two performances of Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt. They are two of the best song writers I’ve heard and the chance to see them together will be amazing.
- David Crutcher, Assistant Technical Director
My staff pick is Turtle Island Quartet & the Assad Brothers.
Once again the ASC is bringing Grammy winners Turtle Island String Quartet to Birmingham. If you missed this performance in 2005 we’re giving you a second chance to hear this wonderful string quartet in concert with an extra bonus of the Assad Brothers!
- Michele Thornton, Financial Assistant
My staff pick is Marsalis Brasilianos.
Get ready for a treat. Grammy award winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis comes to our house to have fun with the renowned Brazilian orchestra Philharmonic Brasileira known for its remarkable work with the music of Heitor Villa-Lobos. This unique program will most certainly be a showcase of various virtuosities. The show will be a sure sell out, so get your tickets early. How can you go wrong on this one?
- Russ Friedrikis, Technical Assistant
My staff pick is the Smothers Brothers show with John Pizzarelli.
Okay, I understand that by admitting I actually watched the original "Smothers Brothers Comedy Show" on television, and I loved it, and it was funny week after week, I am also admitting my age. The music was fun, guests were sometimes controversial, and the criticism of the political mainstream was always looming. Think about it. Pete Seeger was blacklisted in the 50s so his appearance on the show in the 60s was his first t.v. appearance and his anti-war stance was considered an insult to Washington. So, yes I’ll be there. Especially when you add the bonus of John Pizzarelli appearing with them which makes it even more special. I guarantee you’ll have a great time.
- Mike McKinney, Box Office Associate
